Fence Painting Costs in NZ

The finish you choose affects both cost and maintenance long-term:

• Solid paint ($15–$25/m) - Full colour coverage, hides the timber grain. Longest-lasting finish (5–8 years before re-coat). Best for older fences where the timber isn't attractive. Dulux Fence & Exterior or Resene Lumbersider are NZ standards.
• Penetrating stain ($18–$30/m) - Soaks into the timber, shows the grain. Natural look. Lasts 2–4 years in NZ conditions - UV and rain break it down faster than paint. Resene Woodsman or Sikkens Cetol are popular choices.
• Timber oil ($12–$22/m) - Cheapest per coat but needs reapplying every 1–2 years. Good for cedar or premium timber where you want a natural finish. Penrite or Resene Danska Teak Oil.

For most NZ boundary fences (pine paling), solid paint is the best value - lower per-year cost despite the higher initial price.

Per-metre rates vary by 50–100% depending on these factors:

• Fence height - Standard NZ fences are 1.5–1.8 m. Privacy fences at 2.0–2.4 m increase the paintable area by 30–50% and needs ladder access.
• Fence style - Flat paling fences are the fastest to paint. Horizontal slats have more edges. Trellis and lattice are extremely slow - each diamond or gap needs individual brush work.
• One side vs both sides - Most quotes cover one face. Painting both sides adds 50–70% (not double, because the painter is already set up).
• Timber condition - New timber needs a single primer and topcoat. Weathered timber needs sanding, mould treatment, and possibly a sealer before paint. Grey, split timber can double the prep time.
• Application method - Spray application is 2–3x faster than brush on paling fences but needs masking on garden beds and neighbouring property. Not all painters offer spray for fences.
• Tannin bleed - Cedar and macrocarpa fences can bleed tannin through paint, causing brown staining. A specialist tannin-blocking primer ($50–$80 per 4L) is needed before topcoats.

• Solid paint - 5–8 years on a well-prepped fence. North-facing fences in full sun fade and chalk faster - expect the lower end of the range. Shaded fences last longer but may get mould.
• Penetrating stain - 2–4 years. Fades gradually rather than peeling, which makes maintenance easier. Recoat before the colour fades completely - it's much cheaper than stripping and re-staining.
• Timber oil - 1–2 years. Needs the most frequent maintenance but is the easiest to apply (no sanding or scraping between coats).

NZ's high UV levels are the main enemy of fence coatings, especially on exposed, north-facing boundaries. Choosing a UV-resistant product and maintaining on schedule extends fence life by years.
